Motiram Baburam Government Post Graduate College (MBGPG College) in Haldwani stands as a prominent institution for higher education, not only within the state but also across the Kumaon region, with a distinguished record of 46 years in the field of education. Nestled in the foothills of the Shivaliks, this college plays a pivotal role as it caters to the largest catchment area in the state of Uttarakhand, providing educational support to over 50 intermediate colleges in the Nainital district.

The college was founded in July 1960 under the stewardship of the Motiram Baburam Educational Trust. It originally held affiliation with Agra University, Agra, until 1973 when Kumaon University, Nainital, was established, subsequently becoming affiliated with the latter.

In 1982, the college was brought under the province of the Government of Uttar Pradesh in the interest of the public, securing complete government funding from that point onward. Since 1987, the college has also served as a study center for IGNOU, offering a wide array of programs and courses through distance education to a substantial number of learners in the region. Additionally, the college hosts another study center for Uttarakhand Open University.

Procedure of admission
The candidates shall be selected for registration to the PhD degree programme

through research degree entrance test (RDET) followed by an interview
OR
Direct admission (RDTE exempted i.e. without appearing in RDET) but such candidates shall have to apply by filling the online form of PhD entrance examination along with fees within due date. these candidates shall have to compulsorily appear for the interview

Eligibility criteria for PhD entrance test

Aspiring candidates must have a master’s degree from KU (hereafter referred to the university) or any other university incorporated by the law in force and recognised by the UGC, provided also that the candidate fulfils following criteria :

Candidate should have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) or a grade point average equivalent to 55% marks (without rounding off) in the masters degree examination. for other backward classes (OBC) belonging to non-creamy layer/scheduled caste/scheduled Tribes/differently Abledl physically (PH)/visually (VH) candidates, the minimum marks shall be 50% (without rounding off)
As per recommendations of academic Council point number 2 dated 06/03/2013 the students who have appeared/appearing in the post graduation final year/semester examinations of Kumaun university or its affiliated colleges/institutions may also apply provisionally for their PhD entrance examination
